Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) systems use a low-frequency magnetic signal to support everyday wellness. An electromagnetic field is produced by an electrical current in a coil. Whether that signal is simply background electrosmog or a structured wellness signal depends on four things working together: waveform, field intensity, frequency, and resonance.
**Waveform.** A magnetic wave rises and falls. In bioelectromagnetic use, how fast it rises and falls matters more than a smooth curve. Research cited by the manufacturer (Liboff) treats rapid rise and fall times as the feature most responsible for ion movement in tissue. A simple sine wave changes slowly. A sawtooth or square wave changes abruptly, so it induces a stronger electrical effect for the same peak strength. The iMRS prime whole-body mat uses a triple-sawtooth waveform: a composite of many non-sinusoidal low-frequency waves, not a single tone. The smaller pad and spot applicators use a square wave for local application.
**Field intensity.** Strength is measured in microTesla (1 Gauss = 100 microTesla). Coil length, wire size, number of windings, and current set the intensity. These systems stay in the low three-figure microTesla range. The idea is a biological window of intensity: the body responds to a gentle signal, and more power is not automatically better. The mat is built to stay inside that low range. Pad and spot applicators can run higher because they cover a smaller area.
**Frequency.** Frequency is cycles per second, in hertz. The mat’s carrier range is about 0.5 to 15 Hz, inside the extremely low-frequency band often called the biological window. A sawtooth wave also carries many harmonics, so a short session delivers a bundle of frequencies rather than one note. Natural reference points used in this design include the Schumann resonance near 7.83 Hz, produced by lightning in the cavity between the Earth and the ionosphere, and the alpha brain-wave band, which sits in a similar range. Higher-frequency household signals (kHz to MHz from phones, Wi-Fi, and cordless phones) fall outside that window.
**Resonance.** Resonance is an old physics idea: a swing goes highest when you push in time with its own rhythm. PEMF is built on the same principle. A pulsed field inside the biological window is meant to meet the body’s own low-frequency electrical activity so the signal is taken up rather than ignored. Polarity reverses about every two minutes so the body does not simply accommodate to one direction of the pulse.
**Session design.** Whole-body sessions run about 8 to 24 minutes. Programs shift across four dayparts (5–10 am, 10 am–3 pm, 3–8 pm, and 8 pm–5 am), following circadian rhythm research and the traditional Chinese organ clock. Local pad and spot use does not follow that clock. It is aimed at one area with a square wave.
It's worth noting that the effectiveness of PEMF Therapy may vary for each individual, and it's always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before using it to determine its suitability for your specific needs. Additionally, it's important to consider PEMF Therapy as a complementary treatment to traditional medical interventions, rather than a replacement for them.
